Wanderers maintain lead, Bullets sweat for victory

TNM Super League leaders Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and holders FCB Nyasa Bullets yesterday narrowly edged minnows to maintain their unbeaten run in the 2023 season.

Wanderers beat Ekwendeni Hammers 2-1 to keep the top slot with nine points from three games while Bullets defeated debutants Extreme FC 1-0 to remain second on the log table with seven points three games.

At Kamuzu Stadium, Wanderers went ahead in the 27th minute when Malawi’s current most expensive player on the domestic market Gaddie Chirwa opened his account for this season when he connected home a cross from Stanley Sanudi.

Leading top goal-scorer Christopher Kumwembe doubled Wanderers lead in the 30th to take his tally for the season to five.

However, Wanderers conceded for the first time this season after Ekwendeni pulled one back from the penalty spot through Wongani Lungu late in the second half.

At Civo Stadium, Bullets earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over Extreme FC to maintain second position on the log table.

Striker Hassan Kajoke made the difference when he came off the bench at the break to score the priceless goal from a header, to end Extreme’s hopes of getting a draw.

Following the win, Bullets have seven points from three matches, two points behind leaders Wanderers. In all fairness, Extreme matched Bullets in many departments for the better part of the match.

The rookies came to the party and they disturbed Bullets Goalkeeper Blessings Juma had a grand game as he denied Bullets on several occasions.

However, Juma turned into a villain from a hero after receiving a red card for a foul on Anthony Mfune. In a post-match reaction, Bullets Coach Kalisto Pasuwa admitted that Extreme gave them a tough run for their money.

Super League games will continue this afternoon as Silver host Red Lions at Bingu National Stadium.

Debutants Bangwe All Stars will meet Blue Eagles at Mulanje Park Stadium whereas Mighty Tigers face Civil at Mpira Stadium. Kamuzu Barracks will face Moyale Barracks at Civo Stadium.
