Two prison warders from Blantyre Prison have been arrested over Thursday’s prison break where three prisoners escaped.

National prison spokesperson, Chimwemwe Shaba confirmed the development saying the warders Sergeant Wonderful Chiwaula and Sergeant Edward Chelafu who were on duty on the day of the prison escape left the post unattended to which is an offence in the Prison Act.

“Leaving a post unattended to, is an offence in the Prison Act. We also see gross negligence and that is why the police are coming in,” he said.

According to Southern Region Prison Spokesperson Julius Magombo, Haswell Chatata of Village Head Billy, Traditional Authority Ngabu in Chikwawa and Mofat Kudyabwino of Mwandidziwa Village, Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje are still at large while Blessings Rodrick Kapusa of Molande Village, Traditional Authority Mwansambo in Nkhotakota was recaptured.

The three prisoners escaped from custody days after media reports indicated that an unknown person masquerading to be prosecution police officer tricked prison warders at the same prison to have an inmate released saying he was taking him to court.

Few weeks ago the Malawi Prison Service interdicted a prison warder Emmanuel Chiganda of Zomba Central Prison for aiding a prisoner to traffic cellphones into a prison cell.

Other warders Josophat Mphamgwe and Rashid Kamwendo of Lilongwe Prison were suspended for trafficking Indian hemp into the prison.

In the Zomba incident, a prisoner who was found with the phones in his intestines claimed that he got them from Chiganda who told him to insert them through the anus to get them into the prison prompting the prison authorities to suspend him.
