Warm welcome for the Queens

With beautiful faces and lovely smiles, Malawi National Netball Team, the Queens, jetted into the country Tuesday after a surprising and historic third-place finish at the Fast5 World Netball Series in Australia.

Upon arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) in Lilongwe, the Queens displayed their dancing skills as they were being welcomed by Airtel Malawi and Netball Association of Malawi’s (Nam) officials, among others.

There was more sweet news for the Queens as their official sponsor, Airtel Malawi, splashed K6 million to be shared among the players and the travelling officials.

The players and the officials, who were treated to a red carpet reception, will pocket an estimated K300, 000 each.

As they travelled on Axa Shuttle in the streets of Lilongwe, the city erupted into a noisy jubilation— ululations, hugs and kisses were the most outstanding features Tuesday.

The climax was at Sunbird Capital where the Queens were treated to a luncheon, courtesy of Airtel Malawi.

Speaking during the luncheon, Airtel Malawi’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, praised the Queens for a wonderful performance.

“The players showed great character to achieve that feat. Well done ladies. You have made us proud. You have raised the flag so high and we are happy,” Kamoto said.

Government officials and Nam President, Rosy Chinunda, described the exploits of the Queens as a great achievement.

During the tournament, the Queens won three games and lost the same number of games.
