By Emmanuel Simpokolwe:

The country’s five water boards are losing up to K35 billion annually through non-revenue water (NRW), which averages at a staggering 36 percent, Lilongwe Water Board acting Chief Executive Officer Sili Mbewe has said.

She said this Wednesday on the sidelines of the National Workshop on NRW Reduction.

“The issue of non-revenue water is a big challenge to all the water boards in the country. We are doing our best to mitigate the impact by looking at unaccountable water lost through what we call physical losses,” Mbewe said.

Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources Director of Administration Hillary Namainja described the situation as worrisome while Japanese International Corporation Agency Malawi Senior Representative, Naoto Sakonju, said NRW management was necessary for economic growth.

The workshop attracted participants from all water utility bodies.
