Fear has gripped residents of Area 18 A in Lilongwe as they suspect that piped water in the township was contaminated on Saturday.
Some residents in the area reported having dirty water which produced a bad smell, raising suspicion that the water might be contaminated.
Chairperson of the concerned residents in the area, Leonard Phiri, said authorities at Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) have taken water samples from the area for tests.
“I received calls from some residents who suspected that the water was contaminated. So, what we did is to engage Lilongwe Water Board who came to the scene to take samples and we are just waiting for results. As residents, we also want to do an independent test so that we can share notes with them,” he said
LWB Assistant Public Relations Officer, Maurice Mkawihe, said they were investigating the matter.
“We collected some samples which we have sent to our laboratories but, while they are waiting on the matter, we are working on the cause. We suspect that, because of the rains, maybe there is an entry somewhere, where the water has been able to get into our system,” he said.
The water pollution scare comes almost two years after the residents consumed contaminated water.
The victims are battling in court with Malawi Housing Corporation, Lilongwe City Council and LWB demanding compensation for the incident.
