Water scarcity hits Mzuzu
By Samuel Kalimira:
Some parts of Mzuzu City are experiencing interrupted water supply, a development which Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has attributed to vandalism by protesters during last week’s demonstrations.
Areas under Jombo Ward such as Mzuzu Township, Kaning’ina and Nkhalapsa are the most affected.
Jombo Ward Councillor, Chiyembekozo Mvula, said some residents in his ward have stayed for three days without piped water, prompting them to use unsafe water from other sources, increasing the risk of contracting waterborne diseases.
“People are fetching water from wells. Others are queuing on a single borehole. This is pathetic and we don’t know when they would rectify the problem,” Mvula said.
NRWB Public Relations Manager, Edward Nyirenda, said the board expected to fix the problem by Tuesday.
“Take note that during the recent demonstrations, a number of our pipes and meters were vandalised; a thing that affected water supply in a number of areas. Throughout the weekend, we have been working on fixing the lines,” Nyirenda said.
He said the board was assessing the damage at Mzuzu and Karonga offices.
He said the Karonga damage was the worst in the history of the board and their operations have been affected.
