We are doomed as nation

Things have now reached a point of no return for the down-trodden Malawian, as the government has, in all its wisdom, through Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera), decided to further impinge upon the consumer by hiking electricity tariffs by a whopping 25 percent.

All this is to accommodate the latest ‘innovation’ from the Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (Escom) of hiring expensive generators to cover for its inefficiencies, fraud, and political interference that have engulfed the corporation that it is down to its bare bones.

What is left of the corporation is the fumbling in the dark as it plunges the nation into further darkness.

Who will afford to purchase the hard-to-come-buy electricity at such an exorbitant tariff rise of 25 percent?

But in the end Malawians are paying for nothing else apart from the chaos, corruption, fraud, incompetence and deception, evils that have been left to thrive with freewill in entities such as Mera, Escom and Egenco.

We expected President Peter Mutharika himself to do the right thing and come to the aid of the suffering Malawians by instituting deep reforms in the energy sector that include stopping political interference into the running of parastatals that has largely brought us this far.

But we should know better than to be told.

The President cannot effect any reforms anywhere because he is part of the problem as he has allowed those that surround him to mess with our energy needs and left them to go scot-free preferring instead to subject Malawians to untold misery and deprivation.

Under this government and president we are doomed as a people.
