We need to be patriotic

Revelations coming from Mchinji District that some Malawians are promoting illegal entry of foreigners into the country need to be taken seriously.

The Immigration Department has said motorbike and bicycle taxi operators aid foreign nationals, especially Congolese, to sneak into the country using unchartered routes.

This is unfortunate because it shows how low some Malawians hold issues of patriotism.

Apparently, the thinking by such Malawians is that they want to have food on their tables without considering long term risks. Such entrants maybe criminals in their countries of origin. If they beat security screening, they can start terrorising innocent and hardworking Malawians.

Already, Malawi is experiencing criminal acts that have never been known before. Gruesome murders are on the rise so are violent acts of robbery.

But there are also some communicable diseases that unscreened illegal entrants can bring into the country. In recent years, the world has seen outbreaks of strange diseases that caught medical scientists off-guard.

We are talking of epidemics such as ebola and the bird flu whose treatment could not be easily identified. If, as a country, we are struggling with diseases that we have known for years, how much trouble shall we have to fight such strange diseases?

We call upon every Malawian to exercise some level of patriotism. Our communities, especially in the villages, are very cohesive. There is no way a stranger can just dissolve into the communities without trace. We know each other and we should be able to spot any new faces in our midst.

This is where community leaders such as chiefs, members of the clergy and community policing officers should come in and rally Malawians against this vice.

We only have one country and if we destroy it, not many people will be prepared to accommodate us in their countries.
