Mafco have described their character in beating Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 on Saturday as a clear indication that the soldiers have enough arsenal.

The soldiers advanced to the semi-finals of the Carlsberg Cup, joining Be Forward Wanderers, Mangochi Police and Silver Strikers.

Mafco will face Silver at the Civo Stadium on Sunday whereas Wanderers host Mangochi at Kamuzu Stadium on the same day.

Mafco’s acting Team Manager, Noel Chakhame, in reaction to the victory, said the soldiers want to prove critics wrong by winning the cup for the first time since its inception in 2000.

“Nobody gave us a chance to progress to the semi-finals. We are not in the semi-finals by fluke. We have about 30 players and all are good,” Chakhame said.

In the absence of top forward, Richard Mbulu, who was banned for the rest of the season, versatile attacker, Saidi Mtekama, provided the final answer in the 80th minute with a fine header.

However, there were no qualms, let alone pointing fingers at the referee as Bullets accepted the cup exit.

Bullets’ Team Manager, Rahim Ishmael, congratulated the Salima-based soldiers for their spirited performance throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions’ Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said despite some hiccups, the cup has progressed well.

“We are fast approaching the final and the journey has been exciting and entertaining. We hope that the semifinals will bring more excitement to the soccer fans,” he said.

This year’s final will be played on September 10 at a venue yet to be announced.

Wanderers were the inaugural winners of the competition in 2000 when they defeated rivals, Bullets, 2-1, courtesy of late Hendrix Banda’s golden goal.

Wanderers and Bullets have won it twice each. Moyale Barracks, Kamuzu Barracks and Blue Eagles have each won it once.

Silver are also aiming to break the Carlsberg Cup jinx this season.
