Zambezi Magic Channel Head Addiel Dzinoreva Thursday called on the country’s creative industry to bring forward content which they can screen on the recently launched channel.
Dzinoreva made the call during a meeting at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre organised by Zambezi Magic through MultiChoice Malawi.
“The biggest challenge we have at the moment is we do not have content, we need content. We don’t have Malawian stories, we don’t have Zambian stories, Swaziland stories so guys we need content,” he said.
The channel 160 which was launched in July has so far only screened film maker Shemu Joyah’s movies Seasons of a Life and The Last Fishing Boat from Malawi.
Dzinoreva said the meeting was important and long overdue for Zambezi Magic in that they want to engage the film industry for them to understand what they want as a channel as well as making sure that they communicate to the artists that they are a willing partner and a platform for their content.
“Malawi is an important market for us and we are hoping that through this platform we will help grow the industry. Our intention is to empower and grow the industry. We want to invest in it whether be through licensing content and commissioning and paying artists to produce content and we hope that our contribution will build the industry,” he said.
Film Association of Malawi President Ezaius Mkandawire also welcomed the meeting saying it came at a good time for them to hear more from Zambezi Magic and also get to connect with them on how they can send their content earn income.
“One of the most important gathering, in Malawi there are artists who have products but they do not have the platform to sell their products so through Zambezi Magic this is a chance for them to make money,” said Mkandawire.
He added that as a film body, they are in the processing of engaging the government and other stakeholders to critically look into the issue of television stations to start paying content which they use which is vice versa at the moment.
MultiChoice Malawi Sales and Marketing Manage r Chimwemwe Nyirenda hailed Zambezi Magic for coming to meet the actors to discuss the way forward on what happens for them to have content on the channel.
“There is a lot which has been highlighted and again what they have told us is that we need to submit content which is already available and for instance we have content like Ka Jive from Times TV which can be used now and Sunbird Search for a Star for instance,” said Nyirenda.
He said as MultiChoice they are a link between the creative industry in the country and Zambezi Magic, hence they are there to coordinate and remind producers to submit content.
“For example, many people have been talking about quality but the Zambezi Magic team highlighted that it’s not about quality only but also the focus is on the stories. As creators when they are coming up with say movies, they need to tell Malawian stories and not copy stories from other countries,” said Nyirenda.
This was a meeting which saw the creative industry discussing the challenges and the way forward for the industry to grow and these included hands on training which lacks in the country and working together as a team.
During the gathering Joyah, whose films have won several awards also shared his success stories on the two movies and how his movies found space to screen on Zambezi Magic. He also revealed how much it costs him to produce Seasons of a Life and The Last Fishing Boat.
Joyah spent K10 million and K16 million on the movies respectively and he is currently looking for millions to produce the long awaited Chilembwe movie.
Others who were present during the gathering included actor Bon Kalindo aka Winiko, who is also a Member of Parlimanent, Villant Ndasowa, musician Maskal, The Great Angels’ music director Ephraim Zonda, theatre practitioner Frank Patani Mwase, actress Flora Suya and producer Tapps Bandawe.
