We want free, fair primaries—MCP
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has said it is putting in place mechanisms that will help the party to hold free and fair primary elections in all the 193 constituencies in readiness for the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.
Speaking when Rumphi District Committee unveiled seven aspirants for positions in four constituencies in the district, the party’s national spokesperson, Reverend Maurice Munthali, said the party will level the playground for all aspirants for people to choose candidates of their choice.
“One of the things we are saying is that aspirants should conduct their campaign in all the areas without being favoured by anyone in district committees. This will be done in all the constituencies. We are doing this because MCP is a democratic party,” he said
“At the same time, we are asking aspirants to ensure that they respect the party’s four corner stones of unity, discipline, loyalty and obedience,” Munthali said.
In Rumphi West Constituency, Munthali is facing two challengers, Thomas Mtonga and Jolly Gondwe, in the primaries.
In Rumphi Central Constituency, regional secretary Chidumba Mkandawire faces Patrick Mkandawire while, in Rumphi North Constituency, MCP has, for the first time, produced a candidate— Benjamin Mshali— who is likely to face incumbent Member of Parliament Jappie Mhango, who also serves as Democratic Progressive Party national campaign director
