Sunday, Malawi national soccer team, alias, the Flames, take on Swaziland in the Africa Nations Cup battle.
The two teams were in the same group with Zimbabwe and Guinea who also face each other in Conakry.
Mathematically, Zimbabwe are already through to the Gabon finals as Group L winner. Unless a miracle happens, they can miss the train, but fortunately in football miracles do not happen.
It is sad that the team which we have been decorating for a long time with all sorts of adjectives on our back pages has always let us down.
Of course, patriotism demands us that we should support our national team but sometimes we have ended up in shame.
It is difficult to believe in what caretaker coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan is promising that the Flames will be victorious especially when one reflects how this team stabbed us before.
We cannot mask the fact that this team needs to be dissolved and we should start investing in youngsters. It is a fact that some players have done their part and they certainly need to rest.
We have seen their sensational collapse in some of the home games and to continue relying on them is utter rubbish.
Sometimes we risk suffering from high blood pressure supporting a team that is no longer a source of national pride.
I have always said and I repeat, Ramadhan and his panel must be tasked to start building youngsters for such big stage battles. Giving players exposure at a tender age, they can have the fluency of expressing themselves in big tournaments.
Listening to the bunch of confusionists, who masquerade as soccer analysts, who think that one day these players will indeed perform a miracle by taking us to the World Cup or Africa Nations Cup finals is total rubbish!
Those are hopeless individuals who have mastered the art of glorifying mediocrity and need not to be given a chance to comment on our game.
Finally, let us all support our dear Flames by putting on our red attires as they do the battle tomorrow afternoon but Ramadhan and his panel must remember that the real task is not to win this game but to build a young and formidable Flames side.
