Finally, Microsoft has come out of the shell and announced the Windows 10 shipping date of July 29, 2015. The excitement mood has set in. Allow me to join the big party and here is my patronage.
Windows 10 Home will sell for US$119 while the juicier Windows 10 Professional will leave you US$199 poorer. Come on, Windows 10 is supposed to be free lunch, who wants to shell out any nickel for it?
Good question and the good answer is that people who stubbornly clung to Windows XP and Vista machines would have to pay for a ticket that takes them to the glorious Windows 10 dreamland.
For those that are running Windows 7 and Windows 8, they have to make sure that they have downloaded enough updates to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 to qualify for a Microsoft’s generous offer of free migration to Windows 10.
Many people have been getting anxious about the free Windows 10 Upgrade, and for very good reasons, it must be said. The thing is that people do not want to be drawn into a trap where they find that the free upgrade only works for offer period of one year. Users want to know if they will be able to reinstall the free Windows 10 should anything go wrong after the offer period expires.
Gabe Aul, an engineering manager for Microsoft Operating Systems Group answered this via a tweet by saying that people who upgrade to Windows 10 during the first year of existence will be able to perform a clean reinstall of Windows 10 anytime.
The bottom line is that people are skeptical about the Windows free offer. Microsoft is not just being plain charitable; the software giant wants one billion devices running Windows 10 by the end of its 2018 fiscal year. That is not my assertion; it is Terry Myerson’s, Microsoft’s Windows Chief.
This is not the first time that Microsoft has used such a tactic, when Windows 8 was released, those who had purchased Windows 7 computers in a specific time frame in 2012 were allowed to upgrade to Windows 8 for only US$14.99 instead of US$39.99.
Many online magazines this week have said that Windows 10 is the Joshua that will finally lead the Windows faithful into the Promised Land. T3 says that it is a reason enough to make you dump your iPad. Windows 10 will run with the same settings on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop. You can transfer your desktop settings from your laptop to your Windows phone.
Windows 10 debuts with Microsoft Hello that enables you to log into a Windows device with face recognition. The aging Internet Explorer has been replaced with a faster and lightweight Edge browser. Cortana is what Ben Phiri to President Mutharika; a faithful personal assistant.
Rating the three techie giant companies by market capitalization of April 2015, Apple is Microsoft and Google combined (US$760 billion against US$398 billion and US$382 billion market cap). With such figures, you can understand why Microsoft went all the way to build a world-class Windows 10 and offer it free to current Windows 7 and 8 users.
And one more thing, Microsoft will make all the money using its old trick of bundling Windows with new computers and this is called original equipment manufacturers (OEM) route.
