Well-wishers pledge K50, 000 for a goal
In an effort to inspire Malawi national football team, the Flames, well-wishers have pledged K50, 000 for every goal during a must-win return leg match against Guinea at Kamuzu Stadium on Tuesday.
The Flames arrived yesterday from Guinea after securing a hard-earned goalless draw in the West African nation during a Group L Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
In an interview yesterday, Lilongwe-based businessman, Allie Mwachande, who is Managing Director of Mangochi Investments, confirmed that the pledge is aimed at motivating the players.
“As Mangochi Investments, we will give out K50, 000 for any winning goal for the Flames. We believe that the team needs our support as Malawians, so let’s join hands in supporting the team,” Mwachande explained, while clarifying that he would only reward scorers if the Flames win the match.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) first vice-president, James Mwenda, hailed Mwachande for the initiative, saying it is worth emulating.
Zimbabwe top the standings in the group with five points, at par with second-placed Swaziland, whereas Flames and Guinea are third and fourth, respectively, with two points each.
