Wellcome Trust launches award
The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust in collaboration with the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter on Wednesday launched a Health Research Reporting Journalist of the Year Award category.
Speaking at the launch of the award in Blantyre, Director for Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust, Stephen Gordon, said his organisation has decided to incorporate Health Research Reporting Journalist of the Year Award into Misa Malawi annual media awards in order to encourage journalists to report more on such issues.
“Journalists have a role to let the public know about health research and its results. It’s also the duty of the media to encourage young people [through their stories] to participate in science research,” he said.
Misa Malawi Chairperson, Theresa Ndanga, said the launch of the award would motivate journalists to write more on health research. She noted that many journalists do not have an interest in health research because of the technical language used.
“This award will encourage journalists to report more on these issues. The public will also have an opportunity to know more about health research,” she said.
According to Misa Malawi, this award will not be different from other traditional awards in terms of prizes.
Misa Malawi and Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust partnership is for three years, with effect from the 2017/18 awards.
Judges for the awards will accept entries published or aired between February1 2017 and January 31 2018. The deadline for receiving entries is February 28 2018.
