The long-awaited Miss Blantyre pageant takes place tonight at College of Medicine Complex.
The event was expected to be held last Friday but it was shifted to today to give more space to other corporate partners to participate.
Miss Blantyre Organising Committee chairperson, Daniel Ngwira, said yesterday that all was set for the beauty pageant.
“Everything is in place, the contestants are ready to battle it out for the crown and we just call upon people to come in large numbers and sample the event,” said Ngwira.
He said the winner will among other prizes assume two ambassadorial roles – one for the Keep Blantyre Clean and Green and Online Education courtesy of Yanga. Co from Lilongwe which he revealed comes with a vehicle benefit.
“There is also a monthly stipend and then an office will be opened in January in Blantyre for the winner during her tenure of office,” said Ngwira.
He said the event will also be spiced up by performances from poets, comedians and musicians.
Some of the musicians set to perform include Mafo, Blakjak, Lady Pace, Mwanache, Nesnes and Black Nina.
“Guests will be treated to a photo booth session upon entry. We will also have models competing in brand exhibition,” he said.
Ngwira said contestants will also do a group performance.
The Miss Blantyre event will be graced by the Mayor of the City of Blantyre Noel Chalamanda, who recently called on the corporate world and other well wishers to support the pageant.
The contestants were expected to undergo a motivational session Thursday.
“We have an innovation called Brand Exhibition where each contestant has been challenged to identify a brand/company and sell its mechandise on the parade on [sic] this category. It’s first of its kind. Axa, Biz Malawi, Airtel Malawi, FMB and Stylish Designs are some of the brands,” said Ngwira.
Some of the contestants battling it out for the crown tonight include 18- year– old Victoria Mhone, 20-year-old Vanessa Chiutsi, 25-year -old Mercy Mtileni, 21-year old Chisomo Machelo, 18-year old Loveness Chivambe, 19-year old Sandra Kalua, 20 year old Lucy Banda, 18- year old Murimu Kachitsa, Atupele Chikalimba and Vanessa Thyolani.
The reigning Miss Blantyre is Nerani Nthala.
It remains to be seen as to who will grab the crown tonight. The answer will be known after the event.
