The inaugural Nyasa Music Awards will be held tonight at Comesa Hall in Blantyre where the organisers have promised nothing but the best.
This is a platform which will see artists being decorated in various categories.
Save for the Urban Music Party (UMP) awards which are held annually in November, the country has had no proper awards to recognise its artists.
And so the Nyasa Music Awards, according to the organisers, are here to add to the already existing awards but also bring out something new.
The organisers of the Nyasa Music Awards have insisted that they are around not just to make up numbers but rather to offer the best awards which would motivate artists to continue doing better in their trade.
“We are set. We have come a long way and all I can say is that we are ready,” said one of the organisers, Mathambo Lowole.
Lowole admits that this is a big challenge for them in that people will be looking nothing but the best.
“We have consulted and we have looked at how other top awards are done and we are convinced that we are ready and we will never disappoint,” he said.
The awards, however, received criticism from some quarters after the organisers released the list of the nominees in the 18 categories.
Some people observed that the list of the nominees had the same names while others felt the selection was not to the best.
But the organisers said the selection was not done by them but rather a team of experts.
The organisers also went on to hold an interaction event which saw people networking with some of the nominees.
During the interaction event, the organisers also used the platform to answer all the pertinent questions related to the awards.
The nominees have been all over using different mediums to woo people to vote for them using codes for both TNM and Airtel.
The code is 3039 and subscribers need to vote for their favourite artists by sending ‘VOTE’, name of the artist and category.
The voting closes tonight ahead of the awards.
Meanwhile, the organisers have hailed sponsors for coming out to support them in the inaugural awards.
Some of the sponsors of the event are Times Television, Capital Radio, 101FM, Red Ink Media, Entertainers Promotions, Dusk Till Dawn, Malawi Airlines, Nyasa Manufacturing Company, Option Stores and other individuals.
“The most important thing is that individuals and companies have embraced our concept. We are looking forward to a successful event,” said Chifundo Maganga, who is also one of the organisers.
The organisers have since said that as part of the corporate social initiative, part of the proceeds during the awards will go to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital’s Oncology Ward.
The awards tonight will see performances from Tay Grin, Theo Thomson, Piksy, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Faith Mussa, Edgar ndi Davis and Joseph Nkasa.
The 18 categories are Best Video, Best Single, Best Live Act, Best Club DJ, Best Radio DJ, Best Duo/Group, Best Afro Pop, Best Female Artist, Best Male Artist, Best Producer, Best Secular Artist, Best Reggae Artist, Best New Comer, Best Gospel Artist, Best R&B Artist, Best Hip Hop Artist and Album of the Year.
Some of the nominees in the different categories include Gwamba, Malinga Mafia, Martse, Fredokiss, Barry One, Phyzix, Theo Thomson, Anthony Makondetsa, Lulu, Skeffa Chimoto and Patience Namadingo.
