Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) has warned Zomba residents that they may soon face a water crisis if they will not desist from practices that threaten its efforts to sustain water supply.

The warning comes after unknown people set on fire the water utility’s catchment area of Zomba Mountain, exposing water from Mulunguzi River—which is the source of water for Mulunguzi Dam— to evaporation.

Fire, which has been raging for a week, has destroyed a large portion of the forest which provides cover to Mulunguzi River.

“Our institution may not be able to supply adequate water to you, our valuable customers, if these malpractices of vandalism and unnecessary setting of wildfires continue because this will cause the drying up of our main source of water, Mulunguzi River, and no proper flowing of water due to the plundered pipes which will result in a water crisis because of our own negligence,” said Rita Makwangwala, SRWB spokesperson.

SRWB supplies water to some parts of the Southern Region, including Zomba, Machinga, Mulanje and Mwanza districts.
