William Thole in South Africa for trials

HUNTING FOR NEW OPPORTUNITIES—Thole

Malawi National Football Team and Mighty Wanderers goalkeeper William Thole is in South Africa for trials at National First Division side Free State Stars.

Wanderers General Secretary Fadwick Matemba said Thole left the country for the Rainbow Nation on Tuesday.

“We talked and reached an agreement with Free State Stars. This will be a good platform for him to open another chapter in his football career. We wish him all the best,” Matemba said.

Matemba said efforts were underway to find Thole’s replacement as they believe he will make it.

Thole is trying to follow in the footsteps of former Flames goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi, who had a career in South Africa with defunct Dynamos FC a decade ago.

Sanudi, who is Flames and Nyasa Big Bullets goalkeeper coach, said he remained confident that Thole would make the grade at Stars.

Sanudi said Thole’s success in South Africa would help strengthen the Flames’ goalkeeping department as he will be mentored by well qualified coaches.

“Thole has an advantage because of his height and skill. As his coach at the national team, I am happy that my goalkeeper has a chance to start a new career in South Africa,” Sanudi said.

Stars have been home to Malawians such as attacker Jimmy Zakazaka and coach Kinnah Phiri.

The team lies fifth in the Glad Africa Championship with 44 points from 29 matches, six points behind leaders Real Kings from the same number of matches.
