It was a typical case of like father like son when Wellington, son to former Mr Malawi, Isaac Mwangonde, was crowned Mr Karonga on Saturday during a competition held at the Northern Region district’s Museum Hall.
Wellington, popularly known as the Bulldozer, defeated 15 contestants to win the championship.
Wellington said he was not surprised by the victory because he trained hard.
“This should send a stern warning to the incumbent Mr Malawi that his position is shaken. I finished on position two in Mr Karonga competition in 2015 and on position three in Ulaya Classics competition in 2017. Now that I am Mr Karonga, what can stop me from claiming Mr Malawi?” he said.
Jacob Mwangonde finished on second position whereas Lupakisho Katana came third.
Judges for the event were Mosted Simwela, Clement Sichali and Dan Mwakainga who was the main sponsor after pumping in K550,000.
Mwakainga thanked the participants for their commitment towards the event which attracted estimated 300 spectators.
Other sponsors included Frank Mwenefumbo, Charles Ulaya and Eliot Mussa, who contributed K50,000 each whereas Mangasulwa Mwangonde donated K20,000.
