By Mphatso Malidadi:

Malawi Defence Force boxer, Wilson Masamba, has said he lost a chance to win the Universal Boxing Organisation belt because of several factors including weight difference and fatigue.

Masamba suffered a fifth round technical knockout defeat to Idd Pialari in a welterweight title contest in Tanzania on Saturday.

Both boxers were vying for the vacant belt but the Tanzanian underlined his ruthlessness after dominating the fight from the second round.

Masamba said Pialari weighed heavier and this contributed to his defeat.

I weighed about 62.1 kilogrammes whereas my opponent weighed 66.3 kilogrammes. The other challenge was that I arrived in Tanzania late despite signing the contract in good time. It took me long to start off from home and I did not have time to rest and recover.

“Pialari was also very brutal. It was not the boxing that I have known all these years. So I just decided to give up the fight because it was not boxing anymore,” he said.

However, the boxer said he still has a chance to win an international title despite suffering a sixth-round technical knockout defeat.

“I am not a spent force. I will bounce back strongly. It is still possible for me to win an international belt. So, I will be challenging for international fights,” he said.

Following the loss, Masamba, 34, has 29 wins, five draws and 12 defeats.
