Local pugilist Wilson Masamba earned a controversial draw against Tanzanian Epson ‘Jovin’ John in a non-title bout which took place at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe on Boxing Day.
Fans booed when judges announced the result, as the Tanzanian dominated all eight rounds.
John was a threat and showed great boxing skills, forcing the home fans to change their allegiance to the visitor.
For the better part of the bout, Masamba was second best.
However, Masamba was floored when the visitor unleashed a powerful punch in the last round, but managed to beat the 10-second count.
In an interview, Masamba admitted that the Tanzanian boxer was a tough customer in the ring.
“He is one of the best boxers I have met. But I showed him that I am also a good boxer and I am happy that the fight ended in a draw,” he said.
Speak ing through an interpreter, John said he was not satisfied with the draw.
“I think I dominated the bout and everyone saw it. But, any, way it happens. Next time I will knock him out,” he said.
Masamba’s record is 29 victories, 10 losses and one draw whereas John has won seven bouts, drawn thrice and lost twice.
In the main supporting bout, Chikondi Makawa earned a points’ decision victory over Malawi-based Congolese boxer, Regen Champion.
Gunde Boxing Promotions Director, Jack Gunde, said he was satisfied with the turnout.
“We are really overwhelmed by the support from the fans since we started organising boxing. Our aim is to bring top boxers from outside the country so that we should give our boxers a real test, “he said
