Wilson Masamba hopes for new chapter
Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer, Wilson Masamba, has called on his fans to forget the past and watch him open a new chapter when he takes on Tanzanian, Muddy ‘Machine’ Elia, in Lilongwe this weekend.
The former featherweight champion has endured a difficult time away from home with his last two outings ending in humiliating defeats.
On June 4, Masamba’s return to the ring ended in a fifth round retirement to Tanzanian Jonas Segu.
This came against a backdrop of yet another away loss in 47 seconds in Namibia to Jeremiah Nakathila.
Masamba was eventually slapped with a ban in February for allegedly undermining Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board’s hierarchy.
Speaking ahead of the fight at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe, Masamba said it was time to open a new chapter.
“I want to open it with my fans. It has been tough. I don’t want to make excuses. Time will come when I will reveal factors that contributed to my downfall,” he said.
The Tanzanian, speaking through an interpreter, threatened to spoil Masamba’s afternoon.
“I am not here to improve his record. I am here for my reputation too,” he said.
The Tanzanian boasts 15 wins, a draw and three defeats whereas Masamba has 34 wins, a draw and six defeats.
Ngwenyama Boxing Promotions Managing Director, Patrick Ngwenyama, said they had included supporting fights on the menu.
