Pugilists Wilson Masamba and Osgood Kayuni were involved in a scuffle and verbal tirade during the official signing ceremony of their contracts at Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) offices in Blantyre Wednesday.
Tempers flared as the two Malawi Defence Force veterans nearly exchanged punches after they entered the room at the same time but they were stopped by security personnel.
Apparently, the two have split the Kamuzu Barracks Boxing Gym into two blocks, with some supporting Masamba whereas others have opted for Kayuni.
Masamba called Kayuni “disrespectful” and vowed to turn the tables when they square up in an eight-round non-title junior lightweight contest at Robin’s Park in Blantyre on Monday, Mothers’ Day.
“This is now my time to avenge for the defeats I suffered. I have prepared intensively to win the fight. Kayuni is now a spent force and I will be proved right,” he said.
Masamba is enjoying support from fellow MDF boxers such as Crispin Moliati and Salim Chazama whereas Kayuni is sparring with Chimwemwe Chiotcha and Grey Chikwapulo.
However, Kayuni has promised to continue dominating Masamba.
“I will mercilessly crash him again. He is a kid and I will continue teaching him boxing lessons,” he said.
According to boxrec.com, Masamba has 29 wins including 10 knockouts, 13 defeats and two draws while Kayuni, 38, has 17 wins including seven knockouts, nine defeats and three draws.
Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions has organised the bill, which will also feature six supporting fights.
The stable’s managing director Mike ‘Bangwe One’ Chitenje said they have provided a platform for the two to settle their scores.
“Masamba wants to salvage his reputation after suffering three defeats while Kayuni is determined to maintain his dominance. We have given them the stage to punish each other. I will not talk much as I am also preparing for a fight against Ntopwa One Isaac Jomo Osman,” he said.
Musician Joseph Nkasa is also expected to perform at the fight.
