Malawi Defence Force boxer, Wilson Masamba, is set to leave the country for Zimbabwe, ahead of his bout on March 29 in South Africa.

Masamba will fight South African Lunga Stemela in a 10-round Super Featherweight bout at Wynberg Military Base in Cape Town, South Africa.

Masamba said he had opted for Zimbabwe because the country has good boxing trainers.

“I must spend some time training in Zimbabwe to prepare well for my opponent. I want to undergo advanced training so that I return home victorious. Zimbabwe has good trainers such as Clyde Musonda and Issa Phiri. The two are some of the big gurus in boxing,” he said.

He said training with Musonda has helped many boxers to claim international belts, hence his insistence on camping in Harare ahead of his bout.

“If we are to put Malawi boxing on the world map, we need to work with tried and tested trainers. Musonda helped Anisha [Bashir] to achieve her success in the game. He has a gym with everything in it,” Masamba said.

The Malawian will be going to South Africa having lost his bout against a Tanzanian opponent in Dar es Salaam last month.

Masamba blamed his loss on fatigue as he travelled to the East African country by road, arriving less than 24 hours before the fight.
