Wilson Masamba’s fights in limbo

Malawi Defence Force boxer, Wilson Masamba’s potential national featherweight title fight and an international title fight hang in limbo.

This is the case as Masamba’s camp is waiting for his appeal against a six-month suspension, which his management team, No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions, filed against Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB).

No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions Managing Director, Craig Rousseau, said they were waiting for the outcome to confirm the fights.

“They should hit him in the pocket than the suspension,” Rousseau said, without stating the grounds of the appeal.

MPBCB president, Lonzoe Zimba, said the board’s legal counsel will consider the appeal.

“As of now, I can’t say when the appeal will be heard because the legal team will have to meet. However, we will try to speed it up,” he said.

MPBCB penalised the boxer for allegedly undermining the board’s hierarchy following statements he made on two local radio stations prior to his victory over challenger, Malani Kayuni, during a non-title contest.

Among others, Masamba allegedly questioned MPBCB for hiking licence fees from K5,000 to K10,000.

Ironically, Masamba was expected to take on Raston Kayira in a featherweight title fight and also a Namibian in an international fight.
