Centre for Women and Girls Empowerment (Cewoga) has organised a fundraising event dubbed Blantyre Cultural Night to be held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) Saturday.
According to a press statement from the organisers, the event set to bring several activities including poetry from, among others, female poet Luckier Chikopa, is aimed at fundraising for its Girls Scholarship Fund and other various charity activities.
The statement from the organisers says the network seeks to sponsor a total of 50 girls beginning September 2019 academic year.
The event themed ‘Harnessing Culture, Empowering a Woman, Developing the Nation’, will also include a discussion on the effects of some cultural practices on women and girls.
“We are excited to hold this event and we call upon people to come in large numbers. We have lots of activities to satisfy everyone. We have poetry, dances and music,” one of the members Carol Chidothe said.
According to Chidothe, Cewoge is a youth led non-governmental organization which started in 2016.
The organiSation is dedicated to social development with a life-long commitment to work for the empowerment of disadvantaged women and girls in the society.
“Cewoge aims at empowering women and girls socially, economically and politically through establishment and running of girls’ empowerment clubs in community schools and women’s’ community networks known as Strong and Courageous Women,” Chidothe said.
