Women’s football league returns

Women’s Football League action resumes this weekend following a meeting involving the National Women Football Association (NWFA) and teams over the weekend in Lilongwe.

Last month, the teams boycotted games in the league, demanding that NWFA should increase prize money, call for Central Region elections and a consultative meeting.

NWFA General Secretary, Lina Mtegha, confirmed that all was back to normal.

“We had representatives from all regions, including Football Association of Malawi (Fam). We are delighted that we met most of their demands, apart from one which is about raising prize money, which is beyond us. However, we assured them that we would liaise with Fam for consideration,” Mtegha said.

League champions pocket K750,000 but the teams feel the amount is on the lower side.

The teams’ representative, Isaac Osman, who sponsors defending champions Ntopwa Super Queens of Blantyre, confirmed the development.

“We are starting games this weekend. We are glad that, finally, we sat down and discussed the matter for the betterment of our girls,” he said.

Meanwhile, Southern Region Women Football Association has released fixtures for this weekend’s games.

CK open the league action with Ntopwa whereas Evirom host Bangwe at BAT Ground.
