Malawi Women’s National Football Team has opted to play strength testing games against local men’s developmental sides ahead of the Cosafa Women’s Championship scheduled for Zimbabwe from September 13.

The women’s team lost 4-1 to Angaliba in a training match played at Chilomoni Stadium on Tuesday.

Malawi Coach, Stuart Mbolembole, said the friendly games with the men’s teams would help the women gain speed and endurance.

“We started our preparations a bit late and now we trying to catch up. In the absence of international friendly matches, we feel that the local friendly matches with the men’s teams will help our players to improve their speed and endurance. So far, we have spotted areas which we need to work on,” he said.

Mbolembole added that the technical panel has a hint on what sort of opposition to expect during the championship in Bulawayo where they have been drawn alongside Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Malawi is expected to face the hosts on September 13 and Madagascar on September 15. The She-Flames will then meet Zambia on September 17.
