Wounded Red Lions refuse to panic
Red Lions have refused to panic despite staying one place above the TNM Super League relegation zone.
The Zomba-based soldiers were left frustrated after losing 2-1 to Blantyre United at Chilomoni Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.
Lions are on position 13 with 24 points from 24 games whereas United remain on 15th place with 20 points from 25 games.
Lions assistant Coach, Pritchard Mwansa, blamed the loss on referee Kesten Mnenula who awarded United a second goal which he claimed was from an offside position
“In all fairness, that goal should not have stood. Anyway, it has happened and the result is not good for us. We will continue working hard to win our remaining games. Of course, we are not in a good position but we will fight hard to remain in the league,” he said.
Lions thought they had claimed a point but United’s substitute Jide Mbandambanda had other ideas—he connected home a Cuthbert Sinetre free-kick in the 90th minute.
The winning goal came moments after Lions had scored an equaliser in the 89th minute with Gibson Nkhonjera converting a penalty to cancel out Victor Nyirenda’s quick opener, which he scored seconds after kick-off.
United Coach, McDonald Mtetemera, said it was a morale-boosting win and their dream of dodging relegation was alive.
“I knew when I was taking over the team that it would be tough to change the philosophy of the players. Now they know what I want, so they are able to implement what I am teaching them. We will not relent but fight to the end,” he said.
