Writer Macheso shortlisted in Morland Writing Scholarships

MACHESO—I am happy to be shortlisted once again

Award-winning writer and The Daily Times columnist Wesley Macheso has been shortlisted in the 2022 Morland Writing Scholarships.

This is the second time for Macheso, who is a lecturer at the University of Malawi in Zomba, to be shortlisted for Morland Writing Scholarships.

Macheso is the only Malawian on the list, which has been dominated by Nigerian writers.

“I am happy to be shortlisted once again. The first time was in 2020. At the moment I will just wait for the next phase to see if I can get it this time around,” he said.

His proposal is for a novel that explores life in the streets and back alleys of Malawi, which are mostly controlled by gangs of street-connected kids.

Macheso, who crafts ‘The Write Stuff’ in The Daily Times newspaper, won the 2014/2015 Peer Gynt Literary Award for his children’s book, Akuzike and the Gods.

The Miles Morland Foundation says it had over 500 entries and that each entry is graded independently.

The shortlisted submissions will be sent to the judges, who will meet on November 23 in London, the United Kingdom, to decide who this year’s Morland Writing Scholars will be, with the announcement to be made on November 24.
