The national cross-country championship is scheduled to take place at Mzuzu Golf Course on February 17, Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has confirmed.
AAM General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said the competition will be used to identify athletes to represent Malawi at the Confederation of African Athletics Southern Africa Cross- Country Championship on March 3 in Mauritius.
Chitembeya said athletes to compete at the national event will be selected from regional qualifiers on February 3.
“We will have athletes representing various clubs across the country. Individual athletes are also welcome. This is an opportunity for our athletes to prove that they can win medals for the country at the regional event,” Chitembeya said.
He said winners at the Mauritius event will qualify for the African Cross-Country Championship in Algeria.
In the Northern Region, the qualifiers will take place at Embangweni, while Mponela will host Central Region qualifiers and Balaka will host qualifiers for the Southern Region.
Meanwhile, Malawi Defence Force athletes stepped up their preparations with a cross-country contest at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Runners such as Kefas Kasten, Ndacha Mcherenje, Chancy Master in the men’s category and Cecilia Mhango, Nancy Matanda and Mary Kamwendo in the ladies’ stole the show.
