UNDERWENT FITNESS TEST—Flames players

United States-based attacker Yamikani Chester has joined the Flames squad ahead of a trip to Lesotho for friendlies this weekend.

In a statement, Football Association of Malawi Media and Competitions Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, says Chester joined the squad Tuesday.

“He is the only foreign-land-based player who has flown in the country while the rest will join the team in Johannesburg, [South Africa],” Zakazaka says.

Ahead of the team’s departure tomorrow, Flames Coach, Meck Mwase, has since said he would pick his final travelling squad partly based on fitness levels.

The Flames face Lesotho in Maseru on October 11 and 13.

Some 27 players underwent fitness training during the first day of camping at Mpira Village on Monday.

“I will have a report from the doctors probably today [Tuesday] so that I can work with those players who are fit enough. We decided to call many players into camp as we have a long journey to play in Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] and World Cup qualifiers,” Mwase said.

Mwase has included in the squad new faces such as Nyasa Big Bullets defender Nixon Nyasulu and Mighty Tigers striker Chikaiko Batson.

Mwase said he was impressed with the duo’s performance in recent TNM Super League games.

The Flames were drawn in Group B along Uganda, Burkina Faso and South Sudan in the Afcon qualifiers.
