Blantyre-based theatre group YDC returned home Monday from Zimbabwe where it represented the country at the Southern African Festival for Children and Young People (Safe) in Harare.
The group went to Zimbabwe alongside Lilongwe-based groups Rise Arts and Chosen One, who were also expected to arrive Monday night.
At the festival, YDC Theatre staged their play titled Wasted Adjectives.
YDC playwright Fumbani Phiri described their participation at the festival as fruitful and that their play Wasted Adjectives impressed the audience.
“The performances from the groups in Malawi were great and the festival was amazing as well. We learnt a lot,” Phiri said.
He said nine theatre groups from six countries from Southern Africa participated in the festival.
“We actually dominated in terms of groups at the festival. Next year we will be hosting the festival here, probably in August, but we will come back to you on the dates,” he said.
Phiri said they have also received a direct invitation to the 2020 Zambia Jacaranda Theatre Festival to be held next year in March.
“We expect to do a co-production with fellow groups Rise Arts and Chosen Ones. We are making progress and all we want is for us to be exposed but also build our theatre. We have also received an invitation from Botswana Theatre Festival for Young Audience to be held next year in May,” he said.
