Although Flames are participating in this year’s Cosafa Cup to be held in South Africa from next week, Flames coach Young Chimodzi is playing mind games saying Zambia is the favourite to win this year’s tournament.
Chimodzi and his assistant, Jack Chamangwana, have been given a target to win this year’s Cosafa Cup or qualify for Afcon finals if their contracts are to be renewed.
But speaking to one of Zambia’s Newspapers,The Daily Mail, Chimodzi said Chipolopolo have assembled a strong squad capable of defending the Cosafa Cup. “Zambia is the powerhouse of Southern African football. They have dominated the region for many years, therefore, Zambia are favourites to retain the Cosafa Cup this year but Flames should not be ruled out,” Chimodzi was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
Zambia won the cup in 2013 when they hosted the tournament. Last year the tournament did not take place.
Recently, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) challenged the coaches to deliver saying the association had provided enough support for the team to win the Cosafa Cup this year.
The Flames were beaten 2-0 by Zambia in a friendly match at Nkoloma Stadium last Sunday. They will also play South Africa in another strength testing match ahead of the Cosafa Cup. When contacted yesterday, Chimodzi said the Flames are going to Cosafa with the aim of winning the tournament for the first time.
“We are not going there as tourists but our goal is to win the tournament,” said Chimodzi in a telephone interview.
Malawi has never won the tournament despite reaching the finals on two occassions under Danish Kim Splidsboel.
Malawi face Mozambique in the quarterfinal of the Cosafa Cup on May 24 in South Africa.
