Two members from Blantyre-based youthful- theatre group, Young Travellers, Imran Shaban and Blessings Kachala left the country last weekend for Zambia where they are participating at the Sotambe Film Festival.

The group’s film The Beautiful Hen Behind the Yao Mountain is up for an award after being nominated in the category of Southern African competition – Feature Film alongside another Malawian film Submerged by Brenda Mselu but was directed by award-winning filmmaker Joyce Mhango Chavula.

“We are attending workshops which are proving to be an eye opener. We need such platforms if we are to improve in our work. For instance, my background is stage plays and so through these workshops, I want to gain more in terms of how we can progress,” Shaban said yesterday.

He said apart from the workshops, people are also being treated to screenings of movies before the awards this weekend. He said their film has also been screened.

“We have also had time to interact with the audience, learn more about the group but also our film,” Shaban said.

Shaban and Kachala are expected back on Sunday after the awards on Saturday.

Apart from Young Travellers film being selected in the category Film, Young Travellers also received nominations in individual categories in Ken Kananji (Best Actor), Bertha Nkhoma (Best Actress) and Imran Kaisi (Cinematography).

The film, which stems from a stage play, was also selected to screen at the Bayelsa International Film Festival (Biff) in Nigeria to be held early next month.

“We are pushing and we are showing that the film industry is making progress. We should not underrate ourselves,” Shaban said.

Shaban whose group last year made an international tour to countries such as Lebanon, said they want to do more for the country and show that the creative industry has a lot to offer.

“Our film has also made it to the semi-final at the Iran Film Festival,” Shaban said.
