Youth Games set to roll

The 2022 Malawi Youth Games are set to commence this morning at Nankhaka in Lilongwe with seven education divisions fighting for glory.

Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said the games will start with activities including traditional dances from the seven divisions.

“We are excited to bring the education divisions together again. Such a meeting is a cross-pollination of various cultures and traditions that define our country.

“So we will also be celebrating our oneness which exists in cultural diversity. We will then get started with the five sports disciplines that the young learners will compete in. This is what we are doing to enhance a sports culture in our schools,” Ntulumbwa said.

Malawi School Sports Association President Blackson Malamula said teams from the seven divisions started arriving in Lilongwe on Sunday.

“We started welcoming the teams from Sunday while the others arrived today [yesterday]. They had been in camp at various places and we believe they are fully prepared,” Malamula said.

The games are scheduled to wind up with a closing ceremony at Bingu National Stadium in the capital on Saturday.

North East Education Division were the overall winners last year after emerging champions in football (under-17), netball (under-17), volleyball and athletics.
