Youth NGO in fistula response

A youth NGO in Machinga, Youth Response, is linking Fistula patients from Nayuchi in Machinga to Fistula Care Centre at Bwaila Maternity Hospital in Lilongwe where more than 30 women have been treated.

Youth Response Programmes Officer Hidjil Kalinde said the NGO has been implementing a sexual reproductive health intervention thematic agenda among women and the youth in Nayuchi area with funding from Southern Africa Aids Trust (SAAT) since 2010.

The programmes officer added that fistula came out as an emerging issue in the community hence the intervention.

He said Youth Response has so far linked 32 women to Fistula Centre in Lilongwe for treatment since they partnered Fistula Care Centre early this year.

“We are only acting like a link between the patients and the Fistula Care Centre,” Kalinde said.

He said Fistula Care Centre meets all the travel and other logistic costs of patients.

Fistula Care Centre Coordinator, Margret Moyo, commended Youth Response for being a good partner in dealing with Fistula in Traditional Authorities Mchinguza and Chikweo in Machinga.

Fistula Care Centre receives financial support from a Scottish charity organisation called Freedom from Fistula Foundation.

“Fistula Care Centre also partners with Lilongwe Rotary Club and Ministry of Gender in responding to fistula problem,” Moyo added.
