Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, says the future of the sport looks bright following the introduction of youth competitions.
Barely a day after concluding the Monolux Youth League at National Hockey Stadium next to Kamuzu Stadium over the weekend, Ham also staged a similar event at Central High School.
Thindwa said more youth events were emerging.
“As Ham, we are determined to make sure that hockey is revived in schools. We started last year and this year we have already done the Monulux Youth League. So to have another youth tournament at Central High is very pleasing,” he said.
Thindwa said youth tournaments were vital as most senior players emerged from similar structures.
Central High School Headmaster, Nishant Mishra, said it was part of their corporate social responsibility to help in the development of sports.
“We are providing students an opportunity to gain exposure,” he said.
Mishra said the tournament was also open to community sides in line with the institution’s plans to make the sport accessible to all.
