Youth targeted for business startups

Christian Youth Association of Malawi (Cyama) is planning to host a Business Empowerment Symposium where youth are expected to be taught how to start and operate businesses.

This follows concerns that the youth, despite graduating from colleges, fail to secure jobs, which the private sector attributes to economic challenges.

The symposium, which is slated for January 28 at Robins Park in Blantyre, will also attract experts from the banking, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sectors and government trade agencies.

Executive Director of Cyama, Christopher Chimangeni, said during a media briefing in Blantyre on Wednesday that the seminar aims at engaging youth on opportunities to establish them in entrepreneurship.

“We are registering youth from different religious groupings. Our target is to have at least 1,000 youths at the event so that they get ideas as to how to start businesses,” Chimangeni said.

He said that selected speakers from the business sector will drill the participants.
