Youths turn up for Christmas

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS—Youths captured at Gymkhana Club

Young people in Zomba came out in large numbers to celebrate Christmas, which is a day when Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

The young people were all over the streets, with others thronging shops to buy drinks and other food items to enjoy Christmas.

Some decided to storm Gymkhana Club to enjoy performances from, among others, Charisma and ProVoice.

Vaness Khalika, a resident of Chikanda, said she was happy to celebrate Christmas in style.

“Christmas is special and, for Christians, it is the time to show love just as Jesus Christ did in showing us love. I have enjoyed it and I am thankful to God for the gift of life,” Khalika said.

Yona Nkhata said he had an exciting time at a show at Gymkhana Club.

“I enjoyed watching artists such as Charisma perform. I also had time to meet with friends and new people and share ideas,” Nkhata said.

Although young people dominated proceedings in terms of celebrations in the city, the older generation also had its moments.

Benson Ndazipere said he had a normal day and managed to go for a hike to Zomba Mountain.

“I just had to go on a hike and appreciate nature. I also interacted with others on my way and back. Sometimes you just need these moments to enjoy the environment and discover new places,” Ndazipere said.

He was, however, quick to say that present-day Christmas celebrations are different from those in the past years.

With a rise in Covid cases and restrictions, there were no events such as bashes.
