RECOVERED—Some of the rail materials

Mchinji police have arrested a Zambian and three Malawians for allegedly vandalising railway lines in the border district.

Mchinji Police spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino, said the suspects were arrested on the night of January 16 while removing pandrol clips that are used for tightening and securing the railway lines.

He said the police also recovered six bags of clips and investigations have revealed that the suspects have a market outside the country.

“With the help of the community from Mapira Village, the police ambushed the suspects during the night of January 16 to 17 2019 after a well-wisher had tipped the police of the unpatriotic act.

“A group of over five people was interrupted in the course of removing pandrol clips that are used for tightening and securing railway lines; two were caught on the spot while the rest escaped,” he said

Kaitano said a follow up led to the arrest of Geoffrey Mbewe, who is from Vubwi District in Zambia.

He was found with four sacks containing similar materials.

Meanwhile, Davis Ndovi, Security Technician for Central East African Railways which runs the railway line, has bemoaned cases of vandalism along railway lines which, he said, affects operations of the railway.

The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of malicious damage and theft.

A few days ago, a Chinese businessman was arrested after being found in possession of railway materials at his Kanengo company premises in Lilongwe.
