Zambia’s Eastern Province has expressed interest in joining Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal).
This was disclosed over the weekend when three Chipata-based teams visited the country for strength-testing matches against Cezobal’s Bravehearts and Cougars at African Bible College (ABC) in Lilongwe.
Basketball Cordinator for the province, Kenedy Daka, said they feel it would be easy for them to play games in Lilongwe, which is closer than Lusaka.
“We intend to affliate to Cezobal because we can afford playing here and not Lusaka because of distance. We do not have a sponsor at the moment, so it is difficult for us to affiliate to Zambia Basketball Association because of distance as most of the games are played in Lusaka,” Daka said.
Cezobal General Secretary Peter Gomani, had no immediate answer to the proposal and only said he needed to consult mother body Basketball Association of Malawi.
“At the moment, we need to check the rules and regulations so that we map the way forward,” Gomani said.
Bravehearts basketball clubs invited Chipata Nets, Chipata Cavs and Chipata Nets Ladies to play strength testing matches.
The games threw off on Friday and ended on Saturday.
Bravehearts assistant Coach, Dominic Munyenyembe, said the strength-testing matches have helped them to fine-tune for the 2019 season.
“We want to learn from teams from other countries. As you know, Zambia has stronger basketball teams. We have learnt a lot from these games and it was good that our teams won all their games. This means we are slowly getting there,” Munyenyembe said.
