The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday rearrested businessman Zameer Karim after the High Court revoked his bail.

Karim was supposed to appear before the High Court sitting in Lilongwe on Wednesday, April 14, but did not show up, prompting the court to revoke the bail.

Karim is accused of intending to defraud Ecobank of K850 million by obtaining a fraudulent loan using Malawi Police Service (MPS) guarantee.

In a statement which ACB Principal Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala has signed, the graft-busting body says Karim is in custody in Blantyre.

“On 15th April 2021, the ACB rearrested Mr Karim as ordered by the court. He has since been kept in custody at Blantyre Police Station waiting to be remanded at Chichiri Prison,” Ndala says.

Former MPS director of finance Innocent Botomani is the State’s witness in the case involving Zameer Karim.

Speaking after court proceedings during one of the hearings, Director of Public Prosecutions Steve Kayuni said the present case involves forgery of K150 million loan documents, which helped Karim to get funds from Ecobank.

“In the case, Karim and Victoria Chanza, an officer with Ecobank, are accused of forging Police documents which helped them secure a K150 million loan from Ecobank on the pretext that Karim had a contract with the Malawi Police Service,” Kayuni said.

The documents were a commitment to Ecobank to facilitate the loan to Pioneer Investments.

The documents assured the commercial bank that MPS would pay the businessperson for the services.

However, Botomani denied offering the documents to Karim during cross-examination.

ACB officers arrested Karim and Botomani for their alleged involvement in the procurement of K2.7 billion meant for food rations for MPS personnel after Pioneer Investments won the tender in 2015.
