Malawi national football team fringe striker, Zicco Mkanda, stepped off the bench to net the winner that turned Maputo Liga Desportivo into Mozambique Mcel Cup champions on Sunday afternoon.
The injury-time goal helped the hosts Desportivo beat Ferroviaro de Beira 2-1 in the final played at Machava Stadium in Maputo, the Flames striker confirmed.
“It feels great winning the cup for the second time and scoring the winner. I have finished the season with eight goals in 15 games, including four in the league,” Mkanda said.
Beira had put one foot into the cup glory through a screamer of a goal from Abrao Kufa only for Mozambican international, Ze Luis, to level matters.
Then the former Malawi Under-20 forward Mkanda replaced in the second half right-back, Mustafa, in a tactical move that paid dividends for the hosts.
Mozambique newspaper Journal Noticias reports that in the 92nd minute, when the whole stadium expected the game to descend into extra time, Zicco broke the dead-lock and “took the stadium of Machava wild with a shot that hit the top corner leaving goalkeeper Willard helpless.”
Desportivo received a trophy and a cash prize of 550,000 meticais, whereas Beira pocketed 350,000 and medals
