Zomba City Council has disclosed that construction of Zomba Community Stadium will not be completed by October 5 as earlier indicated by contractor-DEC Construction.
The Council’s spokesperson, Mercy Chaluma, said the contractor has advised them that the stadium will not be ready by October due to financial constraints and also Covid-19 pandemic.
“Government is using tax payer’s money to construct the stadium so sometimes we are failing to pay the contractor to make the job easier.
“Currently the contractor has reduced the number of workers due to Covid-19 which is also affecting the progress of our work. Let me also clarify that the contractor also stopped working for some time the moment the recorded,” Chaluma said.
However, Chaluma said the contractor was yet to brief them on when the project would be completed.
“The first phase was completed and the constructor is remaining with the entrance terraces,” he said.
DEC construction started constructing the stadium in March last year.
However the constructor has only completed the first phase of the project which comprises construction of VIP Stands, renovation of the monument hall, car park and ground leveling works.
The project is valued at K700 million.
