Zomba crowns street wrestlers

Tennyson Malikebu was crowned Zomba street wrestling champion at Chinamwali Trading in the Old Capital City on Monday.

Malikebu outwrestled three opponents to claim gold medal whereas Harry Phoso finished as the runner-up.

The champion, who is a first-year public administration student at Chancellor College, won through a technical knock-outs, against Arthur Limani, Kelvin Jackson and Martin Harry.

Malikebu urged the Wrestling Federation of Malawi (WFM)- Eastern Region Chapter to hold such championships regularly.

“Of course, I am excited to win. It was a tough competition because all my colleagues were equally prepared. I would like to appeal to our officials to come up with more events so that we can evaluate whether we are progressing or not,” he said.

In the ladies’ category, Naomi Gowelo was crowned champion after outclassing Maureen Time and Naliet Sam.

“I am glad that I have clinched the ladies’ title. This has surely motivated me to continue working hard,” Gowelo said.

WFM-Eastern Region Chapter Chairperson, Bright Limani, said they hope that the region would perform well during national finals set for Lilongwe in June.

“We believe that we have achieved the objectives of the competition, which included talent identification. We have unearthed Kelvin and Martin. The two performed beyond our expectations. We also feel that we have the right team that will help us during the national finals,” he said.

Street wrestling is an outdoor form of wrestling which falls under Olympic wrestling.

Street wrestling does not involve punches, kicks and elbows like in professional wrestling.

Street wrestling is a form of grappling.
