Police in Zomba District have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion that he defiled a five-month-old baby.
Zomba Police spokesperson Patricia Supliano identified the suspect as Mun’deranji Kanjila.
“Our investigations reveal that Kanjila committed the offense on November 21 in the evening hours.
“It is alleged that a couple was with their baby when Kanjila, who is the suspect, came and asked them to give him the child so that he could play with her at his home since they are neighbours. He took her home where he defiled her.
“After an hour, the suspect brought the baby back. However, the baby was crying. When the mother changed her baby’s clothes, she noticed blood spots on her clothes and bruises on her private parts,” Supliano said.
The parents reported the matter to police, who arrested the suspect.
The police spokesperson said medical results from Zomba Central Hospital indicated that the baby had been violated.
Kanjila comes from Mtiya Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe, in Zomba District.
The development comes at a time the country is commemorating 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
