The Department of Economic Planning and Development has revealed that it will embark on an exercise that will see it registering people in the Unified Beneficiary Registry (UBR) in the remaining 10 districts of the country.
The UBR strategy is aimed at improving effectiveness and efficiency when targeting beneficiaries of social protection programmes by, among other things, harmonising data collection processes.
Director of Social Protection and Poverty Reduction Patricia Mzipita told this publication that, since the programme started, the department only registered people in 18 districts.
She said that was the case as the process was at pilot phase, with minimal resources.

“With the new UBR Strategy that has been launched, we are now ready to finalise registering [people in] the remaining districts in the UBR.
“Our partners, notably the European Union, have assured us that they will support us to have all districts registered in the UBR,” Zimpita said.
On his part, EU Country Representative Michele Crimella said UBR has, since its development in 2016, proved to be an innovation that has transformed service delivery in social protection programmes in Malawi.
He said the EU is delighted to see that the government is committed to finalising the process of registering the remaining districts.

“Rest assured that the EU will be continuously supporting the Malawi Government, especially the PRSP unit and the UBR team, in the tasks that come along,” Crimella said.
