Huawei Technologies Malawi has donated Electronic-Government Smart Office Equipment worth K55 million to the Government of Malawi.
Huawei Technologies in Malawi Managing Director Gu Mu said the equipment would assist Malawi to run its government business, whether international or local meetings, online.
The equipment includes digital tools that are used for video teleconferences and streaming devices.
The donation has come months after Huawei China pledged to make a donation of the said equipment to the government.

Company officials said this when, in July 2023, President Lazarus Chakwera visited Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen.
“One of the main reasons for this donation is to fuel the digitalisation momentum of the country and pave the way for fulfilling the Malawi 2063 vision. This vision recognises that ICT is key to Malawi’s development. In a world that is rapidly evolving, the importance of ICT cannot be overstated,” Gu said.
He added that ICT is the driving force behind progress, connecting people, ideas and opportunities like never before.
Gu said Huawei chose ICT to be part of what it gives back to Malawi as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Speaking after receiving the items, Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu thanked Huawei for fulfilling the promise that was made in China.
“This teleconferencing equipment has come at the right time and will enhance the digitalisation drive that we, as a ministry and as government, are driving. It will also reduce the inefficiencies that we have been having when we had to travel internationally and locally just to attend conferences that we could do virtually. The costs are high and that affects our fiscal discipline.
“We are living in a very tight fiscal situation and we cannot afford such luxury. So, the coming in of this equipment will help us to remain within the fiscal discipline the President is preaching,” Kunkuyu said.
